Makalu is the 5th highest Himalayan peak in the world. 8,485m. high above sea level, which is situated northeast at Sankhuwasabha district in Nepal, between Nepal and Tibet (autonomous region of China) 19 km. southeast of Mt. Everest. The peak is climbing only from the Nepal side. Above 8,000m. Himalayan peaks, Makalu is one of the difficult and technical rock and ice climbing peak.
Makalu was first ascended on 15th May 1955, French expedition team by Lionel Terray and Jean Couzy. Next day Guido Magnone and Gyalzen Norbu Sherpa summited the peak same route from northeast ridge. There are several routes to the summit, the most technical route is west pillar.
As per our itinerary, flight from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar airport, from airport drive to Num village, trek will start from Num village through Siduwa, Tashi gaon, Kongma la, Dhobate, Yangli kharka, Langmalea to Makalu base camp. After summit, the same way back to Tumlingtar airport or other options to cross the Sherpani Col, Ama Labtsa to Khumbu.
For this expedition, the age doesn’t make any difference, if you are physically fit and healthy, between 18 to 60 years. During the expedition, if someone is seriously injured or sick, the only option is to be rescued by Helicopter. The rescue is quite expensive, everyone needs to buy travel insurance from their own country. If not, we will help. You can buy such insurance policies in Kathmandu too.

For this expedition, you can make your own group or you can join with other groups. Before your arrival at Kathmandu all the necessary climbing permit, lesion officer, base camp staff, equipment and foods, climbing Sherpas, transportation and other requirements will be ready in time.

Tent accommodation, meals (breakfast – lunch – dinner) with hot drinks. human or animal porters, base camp staff cook, kitchen boys, climbing guide, climbing Sherpas (porters), one person one tent accommodation with double mattresses at base camp, dining tent with Table, stools and gas heater, Kitchen tent with kitchen utensils, store tent, shower tent, toilet tent, solar panel with battery for recharge electric device, Satellite phone sets for communication etc.
Note: High altitude tents, climbing gears, climbing equipment for Sherpa, high altitude foods, Oxygen bottles, HP gas, walkie-talkie sets etc. expedition team should bring or buy at Kathmandu.
Upon your arrival at the Tribhuvan international airport, our representative will welcome you with flowers, drive to the star hotel as your booking, and welcome drinks at the reception check in room, Dinner at your hotel’s restaurant our tour manager will brief you about the expedition and other necessary information.
Check the expedition’s equipment, shopping other necessary items what you need, just relax at the same hotel or visit as you like.
After breakfast, your guide will pick you up at the hotel, drive to the airport for about 45 minutes flight to Tumlingtar. During the short flight you can see a giant view of Makalu and many Himalayan peaks. At Tumlingtar airport meet with the trekking staff, lunch at Tumlingtar. Drive by reserve jeep about 3 to 4 hours to Num village for overnight camp
After breakfast, descend to Arun river cross suspension bridge climb Bhet gari for lunch, after short rest climb to Siduwa village for overnight camp. 5 to 6 hours trek.
After breakfast, an easy trek to Naba gaon for lunch, trek continues to Tashi gaon for overnight camp. Good campsite with beautiful views. 5 to 6 hours trek.
After breakfast, trek through the forest and bamboo bush, lunch on the way, gradually climb to Khongma la for overnight camp. Good campsite with a beautiful view. 6 to 7 hours trek.
After breakfast, gradually climb through rhododendron forest to Kongma la cross Sipton la trek through Kalo Pokhari, Tin pokhari, pack lunch with hot tea or juice at the lake, from Keke la descend to Dhobate for overnight camp. 5 to 6 hours trek.
After breakfast, descend to Barun river, follow the river, lunch stop on the way, trek continues to Yangri kharka there are few tea houses and a very beautiful campsite. 6 to 7 hours trek.
Now you are above 3,500m. you need rest for high acclimatization, after breakfast visit Shiva Dhara back to camp for lunch. Day time take a hot shower and just relax.
After breakfast, an easy trek along the Barun river, lunch at Taa Tasha (one tea house) trek about one hour and climb to Langmale kharka for overnight camp. There are few tea houses. Very beautiful campsite with peaks. 5 to 6 hours trek.
After breakfast, an easy trek with a nice view of Hongu and other peaks, lunch at Shershong trek continues to Makalu base camp for overnight camp. Below the base camp there are few tea houses. 6 to 7 hours trek.
Sherpa and base camp staff will establish the base camp, set up all the tents at base camp.
As per local Buddhist tradition, worship before you climb the Makalu. A local Lama will offer a puja ceremony and hang the prayer flags at the base camp for the peace, long life and success of the expedition.
Check and fix your climbing equipment and make ready to climb for the next days.
After four-night well acclimatize at base camp, from day 15 to 44, during 30 days period climbing from base to summit and back to the base camp will be enough time, if not you can extend the time for summit.
Pack all your personal equipment. Staff will clean the base camp, collect all the garbage for disposal.
From base camp same way descends to Langmale for lunch, trek continues to Yangri Kharka for overnight camp. 5 to 6 hours trek.
After breakfast, same way back to Dhobate for lunch overnight camp at Kalo pokhari. 6 to 7 hours trek.
After breakfast, same way descends to Kongma la for lunch, trek continues descends to Tashi Gaoun for overnight camp. 5 to 6 hours trek.
After breakfast, same way back to Siduwa for lunch, trek continues descends to Arun Khola, gradually ascending to Num village for overnight camp. 5 to 6 hours trek.
After breakfast, drive to Num by private jeep, lunch and overnight hotel accommodation at Tumlingtar airport.
After dinner Tips for climbing Sherpas and staff, celebrate expedition success gathering party with team members and staff.
After breakfast, check in the ticket, morning flight from Tumlingtar to Kathmandu. At Kathmandu airport our representative is waiting for you, drive to the hotel, welcome drinks at the reception check in room. Afternoon free day, lunch you choose at any restaurant. Evening our representative will take you for a farewell Nepali typical dinner with culture program. After dinner, back to the hotel.
After breakfast or lunch, our representative will drive three hours before your flight schedule to the airport, flight back to your destination. Complete the trip.
