Ajanta Ellora cave Pune, India

Ajanta and Ellora both, solid rocks cutting caves at the hill. These caves are most famous historical places in India. Ajanta Caves were made in the 2nd century. Ajanta Caves has viharas and Buddhist monasteries, there are 30 rock-cut caves with beautiful Buddhist painting, highlight is its ceiling and wall, which has designs of Buddha, devils, birds, fruits, and flowers.

The Ajanta Caves have five chaityas, which are basically prayer halls. Other caves are known as Viharas, which are monasteries with residents, used by Buddhist monks for meditation and the study of Buddhist teachings.

The caves were first discovered in 1819, when Jon Smith, a British official, accidentally stumbled upon the horse-shoe shaped rock while hunting a tiger. Ajanta Caves is 104 km from Aurangabad town.





Ellora Caves, which were built between the 5th and 10th century, There are 34 solid rocks cutting caves. The complex has 12 Buddhist caves, 17 Hindu caves, and 5 Jain caves. At that time all these three religious people could live and work together, which is a good example for the nowadays religion.


Ellora cave is only 29 km. far from Aurangabad town. Distance between both the caves is 100 km. away from each other. Today the Ajanta and Ellora Caves are recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as announced in 1983. To visit the historical caves thousands of Buddhist, Hindus, Jains and tourists are coming from all over the world.

Aurangabad is the main town in this region, with the facilities for hotel accommodation and restaurant as well. There are several options to reach Aurangabad by flight, by train or by bus.
