Dear all trekkers,
Namaste! A warm welcome to trekkers from all over the world. We invite you to trekking at Makalu Base Camp region. Which is a true paradise for those who love high-altitude adventure, untouched nature, and the serene mountain environment.
About Makalu Base Camp: Makalu Base Camp (MBC) trek is your perfect which called the "sister trek" to Kanchenjunga, it offers a similar off-the-beaten-path experience but with even more dramatic vertical climbs, you start in a subtropical jungle at (alt. 460m.) and reach a high-alpine base camp at (alt. 4,870m.).
The Makalu (alt. 8,485m.) is 5th highest Himalayan peak in the world. Which located at Far East / North region from Kathmandu. This area is completely remote, there are not any motor road after Num village.
Highlights the journeys: Makalu Base Camp is one of the less crowd trekkers regions because of distance and accommodation. This trek will be beginning from Tumlingtar airport, after flight drive to Num Bazaar, trek will start from Num Bazaar descend to Arun Khola (River) ascent to Tashigaon, which is the last permanent village to Makalu base camp. From Tashigaou, you face a legendary "vertical" day climbing thousands of stone steps through rhododendron forests to reach Khongma Danda (alt.3,500m.).
During the trek you have cross above 4,000m. passes Kongma La, Shipton La and Keke La. Once over the passes, you descend the hidden Barun Valley, a pristine wilderness of waterfalls and towering cliffs. You trek pass through Yangri Kharka, Langmale Kharka to reach the Base Camp, located on a wide, rocky flat with an overwhelming view of Makalu's South Face.
While the Makalu Base Camp trek has seen a rise in small teahouses and lodges in recent years, but not so comfortable room and beds. We recommend a tented camping trek will be much better for Makalu base camp.
The lodges beyond Tashigaon (like Khongma, Mumbuk, and Yangri Kharka) are often just basic stone huts. They can be damp, poorly ventilated, and extremely crowded during the peak season.
The Camping Advantage: With a private tent, you have a guaranteed, clean, and dry space. We provide high-quality, four-season tents and thick insulated mattresses that are often much warmer and more hygienic than the old foam pads found in remote teahouses.
Between Tashi Gaou to Makalu base camp, there are not any local settlement only few tea houses and lodges are available for daily meals and accommodation which are not comfortable for the trekkers. The best way is tented camping trek, which cost more than lodging trek.
It is completely remote area; you have to take all the necessary medical and daily use items along with you from Kathmandu. Wi-Fi and phone service always problem. This trek will start from Num Bazaar (alt. 1,509m.) after motor road, trek pass through Sinduwa, Tashi Gaoun to Makalu base camp (alt. 4,853m.) and return back same route to Num Bazaar, drive to Tumlingtar airport.
Alternative route: If you want, there is an alternative nomad route from Yangri Kharka to Hatiya Gola via Khorlange, from Yangri Kharka to follow left side. This is a rugged "nomad" trail. It stays high and follows the ridgelines used by local herders (Yaks and Chauris). At Hatiya Gola the route for 'Lumba Sumba Trek' will be join. This route is possible with local guide as a tented camping trek. I did try 2011 Nov. but heavy snowfall and bad weather we did cancel.
Note: See below for an overview of the 18-day, Makalu base camp journey. For complete details on Kathmandu hotels, trekking routes, elevation, walking times, meals, and accommodations, refer to the "Day-by-Day Itinerary" at the bottom of this page.
Himalayan panorama: The Himalaya and natural views always better from high elevation. After Langmale you can see the clear view of peak 6 and 7, Hongu chuli some un-name peaks and Baruntse. From base camp, you can look a giant view of Makalu just front of you.
High Altitude sickness occurs when your body cannot get enough oxygen due to the lower air pressure at high elevations, especially if you ascend too quickly. It is a common condition that can affect anyone at any time, regardless of fitness level. While there is no need to be nervous, it is vital to stay attentive to your body.
How to recognizing the major symptoms? If you experience any of the following symptoms, stop your ascent immediately:
1. Persistent headache or dizziness. 2. Nausea or vomiting. 3. Loss of appetite. 4. Difficulty sleeping.
What to do if symptoms appear: Do not climb higher. The best remedy is descending to a lower altitude as quickly as possible. While preparing to descend or resting, follow these steps:
• Hydrate: Drink plenty of hot fluids.
• Eat: Try garlic soup, a popular local remedy for circulation.
• Rest: Allow your body time to acclimatize and recover.
How to prevent from high altitude sickness?• Climb slowly: Avoid going from low altitude to over 2,500 meters (8,000 feet) in a single day if possible.
• Limit sleeping elevation: Above 3,000 meters (10,000 feet), increase your sleeping altitude.
• Climb high, sleep low: Hike to higher elevations during the day for acclimatization, but return to a lower altitude to sleep.
• Take rest days: Schedule a dedicated rest day every 3 to 4 days, or every 1,000 meters (3,300 feet) of total gain.
Our Safety guarantee: Most trekkers feel better after a day of rest or a slight descent. However, if your condition does not improve, your guide will take immediate action, for another solution.
Emergency rescue: Your safety is our top priority. In the event of serious illness or injury, ground transport is too slow due to the remote terrain. The fastest and most reliable option is emergency helicopter evacuation.
We can arrange an emergency helicopter evacuation from any point on the trail back to Kathmandu within a few hours (weather permitting). To ensure a smooth and life-saving rescue.
Travel insurance: Unfortunate illness or injury can happen to anyone, anywhere. In the remote mountain regions where we trek, your safety is paramount. Because ground transport to the nearest clinic can be slow, we rely on rapid aerial response.
• Helicopter rescue: From Kathmandu, offers the fastest rescue service but is extremely expensive.
• Action required: We strongly advise you to issue a comprehensive travel insurance policy from your home country or in Kathmandu. Your policy must specifically cover emergency helicopter evacuation and medical expenses at high altitudes up to 5,000 meters.
Our team will handle all the logistics with your insurance provider and the helicopter operators so that you can focus entirely on recovery.
Pro tip: Please Always carry a digital / printed copy of your insurance certificate and the 24-hour emergency contact number for your provider.
Due to the effects of global warming, mountain weather has become increasingly unpredictable. However, the Himalayan seasons generally follow these patterns:
Spring Season (March - May) Spectacular clear views. The stable weather brings excellent visibility. Above 3,000m, beautiful landscape with Himalayan rhododendrons and various wildflowers in full blossom.
Autumn Season (September - November) one of the spectacular, uninterrupted views of the mountains and high Himalaya. Perfect temperatures for trekking, making days enjoyable one of the best times for the trek.
Winter (December – February): The winter season present significant challenges for the Makalu base camp. In winter, heavy snowfall frequently blocks high Pass, making the crossing dangerous or impossible.
Trekking permits and fees: For Makalu region require a trekking permit, Makalu Barun conservation entry permit and a TIMS card (Trekkers' Information Management System). We will handle the arrangement of these for you. Local government fees will be managed and arranged by your trekking guide on the spot.
For Trekking Permits we need in advanced:
• A recent passport-size photograph by e-mail.
• Your passport, photo copy valid for a minimum of six months.
Note: We will proceed to issuing the trekking permits from Dep. of Immigration Nepal, before your arrival. We need your original passport to collect the trekking permits after your arrival at Kathmandu.
Trekking accommodation: At Makalu region there are several small lodges and restaurants are available. Most lodges are built of stone and wood. Rooms are typically twin-sharing with two simple wooden beds and thin foam mattresses. The "Walls": In many higher-altitude lodges at Kongma, Dhobate, Yangri Kharka or Makalu base camp. The walls are often thin plywood. You will hear your neighbour’s alarm clock or snoring - earplugs are a must-pack item.
Heating system: There is no heating in the bedrooms. The only warm place in the entire lodge will be the communal dining hall, where a central pot-bellied stove (usually fuelled by dried yak dung or wood) is lit in the evenings.
Hospitality: This is where the trek shines. The lodge owners often treat you like a guest in their own home. Sitting around the fire in the evening, sipping hot sea.
Daily meals at trek: Each lodge or small restaurant you will get vegetarian or non veg. dishes, different kinds of breakfast set, lunch and dinner. Authentic Nepalese Dal Bhat, Tarkari, chapati, Tibetan breads, momos, Stew, pasta, noodles, pizza, several items of fresh organic vegetables, potatoes, meats, eggs, soups, hot and cold drinks, which you can check at menu.
